Inc. Magazine is a monthly periodical for entrepreneurs and small business owners with circulation nearing 690,000, according to estimates from 2007. Every year since 1982, Inc. has released a list ranking the top fastest growing, privately owned companies in America. In 1982, the list included the top 100 companies. One year later, the list expanded five times to become the Inc. 500. Now, thanks to the internet, Inc. has “incorporated” the list into its website and expanded it to include a ranking of the 5,000 fastest growing private companies.

The Inc. 5000 is a prestigious list that many business owners hope to make. Along with the honor comes great opportunities for marketing and public relations. Along with the award comes a free profile on Inc. Magazine’s business networking site IncBizNet. Registering to the site is free, and also includes a free blog, press release distribution and access to a community of like-minded people.

Inc. Magazine looks at all industries, but one industry in particular has seen good coverage from the publication. Since real estate companies are usually self-starting, Inc. pays special attention and often recognizes several fast growing real estate related companies. The industry is often recognized with its own “Top 50″ list on the Inc. Magazine website.

States that were strongest during the housing boom of previous years were well represented in the real estate vertical of the 2008 Inc. 500. Eight real estate related companies are located in the Sunshine State - Florida. Illinois has more than every state except Florida, with five. Nevada and Texas each contain four of the top 50.

Of the top 50 real estate companies in the Inc. 5000, 21 offer broker related services. In a related but sometimes forgotten division of real estate, 15 of the top 50 real estate companies are involved in building and construction. Real estate investment companies were also well represented among the Inc. 5000 top 50 real estate companies - 8 of them made the 2008 list.

A real estate marketing and lead generation company also made this year’s list. GetMyHomesValue, a Lancaster PA-based business wound up #16 in the top 50. The company offers internet marketing and lead generation to real estate agents nationwide. In the past few years, it has grown to provide a slew of other tools, including websites, coaching, CRM tools and more. With a 786% growth in revenue, it’s no surprised that they were recognized on the Inc. 500.

The Inc. 500 is a great annual list of the fastest growing, privately owned companies in the United States. Each year, Inc. hosts an annual conference and awards ceremony that brings together executives from each of the Inc. 500 and Inc. 5000 companies. Past keynote speakers at the Inc. 5000 conference and award ceremony include President Bill Clinton, Marshall Goldsmith, and Thomas Friedman.
